REBELLIOUS MIDDLE ASIAN TRIBE IN THE TRIANGLE OF SECT, REVOLT AND POLITICS: BARZANIS ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT Barzani Tribe, whose name stems from the Barzan Village in the north of Iraq, is the most significant and well known among the Kurdish tribes living in this region. The Barzans, who initially settled on the stage of history as a small Kurdish tribe living in a mountainous village, became robust and ascendant in the region by the tribal leaders taking on the caliphate of the Naqshbandi order. With this power and influence they have obtained, the influence of Barzani tribal leaders from the sectarian sheikhs has been increasingly manifested in socio-political areas not only in the Barzan Village, the center of the tribe, but on all Kurds living in the region in general. As a matter of fact, since the beginning of the 20th century they have pioneered many uprisings and they have always existed in national issues in terms of the Kurds in Iraq and in international ones in other countries neighboring Iraq. In this context, with this study, the historical origin of the Barzani family will be descended and from the first separatist activities and efforts to the independence referendum, that led by the Tribe, will be discussed in detail.
